Encounter – The Gift Of Healing
In our ongoing sermon series “Encounter,” Pastor Derrick Overholt delves deep into the miraculous gift of healing through faith. His message invites us into a profound exploration of divine intervention and the spiritual paths that lead to recovery. Derrick begins by sharing gripping personal stories that challenge us to ponder the mysteries of God’s will and the extraordinary realm of the Holy Spirit’s gifts.
At the tender age of sixteen, Derrick experienced a miracle that would shape his faith forever. His mother was scheduled for a second brain surgery to repair an aneurysm—a procedure that required opening her skull. Deeply moved by a conviction that his mother had been healed, Derrick approached the doctor, urging him to retest before proceeding with the surgery. The doctor dismissed his plea, and the operation went ahead as planned. Hours later, the surgeon emerged, visibly shaken, and admitted, “I wish I would’ve listened to you. I found no brain aneurysms.” This astonishing event not only spared his mother from unnecessary surgery but also reinforced Derrick’s belief in the power of divine healing.
Derrick recounts another remarkable incident that took place during a church service at Trinity. A woman had collapsed and was declared dead by a nurse present in the congregation. Without hesitation, Pastor Steve Fatow and several church members, including Derrick, rushed to her side. They prayed fervently, invoking God’s mercy and healing power. Within minutes, the woman gasped for air, her pulse returned, and she was revived before the ambulance arrived. Witnessing such a direct manifestation of God’s intervention left an indelible mark on Derrick’s spiritual journey.
On a mission trip, Derrick encountered a person confined to a wheelchair due to one leg being shorter than the other. As the mission team prayed over this individual, they watched in awe as the shorter leg grew to match the other. The person stood up and walked, rejoicing in newfound mobility. In Tanzania, while praying for a man’s salvation, Derrick witnessed the restoration of the man’s sight. The blind man, now able to see, ran towards Derrick, expressing gratitude and wonder.
These testimonies of miraculous healings are both inspiring and humbling. They illustrate moments where the impossible became reality, showcasing the profound impact of faith and the Holy Spirit’s power. However, Derrick also shares the deeply personal and heartbreaking experience of losing his son, Eli. Despite a healthy pregnancy and no apparent complications, Eli faced severe health challenges immediately after birth. Derrick and his family prayed incessantly for healing, clinging to hope and trusting in God’s promises. Yet, after a critical surgery, Derrick held his son as he took his final breath. This devastating loss brought forth questions about faith, healing, and the sovereignty of God’s will.
Confronted with such contrasting experiences, Derrick invites us to explore the complexities of divine healing. He delves into biblical teachings, examining scriptures like Isaiah 53:4-5, which prophesies the coming Messiah and speaks of healing through His suffering: “Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows… and with his wounds we are healed.” Derrick discusses how this passage is interpreted in the New Testament, highlighting that both Matthew and Peter reference it in the context of physical healing and spiritual salvation.
Derrick emphasizes that while God’s promises are eternal, healing may not always manifest in the way or timing we expect. He points to the Apostle Paul’s experiences, noting that not all ailments were cured immediately—even among the early Christians. For instance, Paul mentions leaving Trophimus ill in Miletus (2 Timothy 4:20), suggesting that divine healing operates within God’s sovereign timeline rather than our own.
Faith, Derrick explains, is a crucial element in the journey toward healing, but it must be rightly understood. He cautions against the harmful belief that a lack of healing equates to insufficient faith. This misconception can lead to unnecessary guilt and overlooks the multifaceted nature of God’s plan. Faith is about trusting in God’s ability and His sovereign will, not about the intensity of our own belief or efforts. Healing is a gift from God, not something we can earn or manipulate through sheer willpower.
He explores potential barriers to healing, encouraging introspection and spiritual assessment. Unconfessed sin, for instance, can hinder our relationship with God and, consequently, the flow of His blessings. Derrick also poses the thought-provoking question: Do we truly desire healing? Sometimes, individuals may subconsciously resist healing due to fear of change or loss of certain comforts associated with their condition.
Moreover, Derrick underscores the importance of stewarding our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit. He highlights how lifestyle choices—such as diet, exercise, and managing stress—can impact our physical health. Neglecting these aspects may impede healing or contribute to illness. He also acknowledges that spiritual warfare can play a role, referencing instances in the Bible where unclean spirits caused physical ailments.
Persistent prayer is another vital component Derrick discusses. He introduces the PRAY acronym—Praise, Repent, Ask, Yield—as a framework for maintaining a deep connection with God. Praise acknowledges God’s sovereignty and goodness. Repentance clears the way for restored fellowship. Asking reflects our dependence on God for our needs, and yielding signifies trust in His will, whatever the outcome.
Throughout his message, Derrick balances the tension between God’s ability to heal and His sovereign purposes. He reminds us of the apostle Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 4:16-18, where Paul speaks of outward afflictions contrasted with inward renewal: “So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.” Derrick suggests that sometimes, God allows us to endure physical challenges to cultivate spiritual growth, deepen our reliance on Him, or fulfill a greater purpose we may not immediately understand.
Derrick’s personal journey, marked by both miraculous healings and profound loss, adds a layer of authenticity and empathy to his message. He doesn’t offer simplistic answers but instead invites us into a deeper trust in God’s character and promises. He acknowledges that while we may not always grasp God’s ways, we can rest in the assurance of His unfailing love and eternal perspective.
As he concludes, Derrick calls us to action. He encourages us to pray boldly for healing, believing in God’s power and compassion. At the same time, he urges us to surrender our desires to God’s will, echoing Jesus’ prayer in Gethsemane: “Not my will, but yours be done.” This posture of humility and faith opens the door for God to work in and through us according to His perfect plan.
Continuing the “Encounter” series, Derrick’s message on “The Gift of Healing” challenges us to reflect on our understanding of faith, healing, and God’s sovereignty. It invites us to engage with the complexities of our spiritual journeys, embracing both the mysteries and the revelations. Whether we are in need of healing ourselves or supporting others in their struggles, we are reminded to approach God with a heart full of faith, trust, and openness to His will.
We are encouraged to join together as a community of believers, praying for one another and uplifting each other in love. Derrick’s experiences testify to the profound impact of collective faith and the power of the Holy Spirit at work among us. As we navigate the uncertainties of life, we can find solace and strength in the knowledge that God is with us, working all things for our good and His glory.
Let us, therefore, hold fast to hope, persevere in prayer, and embrace the journey of faith with courage and humility. Derrick’s message is a stirring reminder that, regardless of our circumstances, we are deeply loved by God, and His promises are steadfast. May we continue to seek His presence, trust in His timing, and witness the transformative power of His healing in our lives.
