In our fast-paced, achievement-driven culture, the notion of greatness is often tied to status and recognition. Pastor Tyler Lynde invites us to see that a different standard of greatness exists—one found in humble service rather than accolades. Drawing from Jesus’ interaction with His disciples in Luke 22:24-27, Tyler shows how Christ challenges the human urge to rise above others, teaching instead that true significance lies in elevating those around us. This “upside-down kingdom” perspective encourages us to ask not “How can others help me succeed?” but “How can I serve with love and humility?”

Tyler uses a personal story about caring for a firstborn child to illustrate how acts of service often expose our self-focus. Suddenly responsible for tending to an infant’s needs while his wife recovered, he realized how easy it had been to overlook the daily sacrifices of others. This realization mirrors a deeper spiritual truth: God calls us to pay attention to the everyday opportunities for servanthood, whether by helping a neighbor, volunteering at church, or fostering a supportive atmosphere within our families. Deuteronomy 10:12 calls us to serve God wholeheartedly, while Galatians 5:13 encourages us to use our freedom to serve one another in love. Tyler points out that our mission also extends beyond the walls of the church. In Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus tells His followers to go and make disciples of all nations—an invitation that includes going, sending, and praying for others near and far. At its heart, this global mission flows from the same servant-minded posture that Jesus exemplified when He knelt to wash His disciples’ feet (John 13:3-17). By adopting Jesus’ example of selflessness, we discover a purpose that transcends ambition and leads us into deeper unity with God and each other.

Tyler also highlights the joy found in a culture of service, where everyone contributes according to their strengths. A church community that prioritizes caring for those in need—whether by visiting shut-ins, making meals for new parents, or counseling those in crisis—creates an atmosphere brimming with compassion and authenticity. Young people, too, are encouraged to consider their unique roles in outreach and missions. If we want to reach farther, Tyler explains, we can’t shy away from stepping outside our comfort zones and channeling our gifts where they’re most needed.

Ultimately, the life of Jesus shows that humility and servant-heartedness stand at the center of God’s kingdom. Instead of clamoring for positions of honor, Jesus elevated the simple act of loving and serving others. Far from diminishing our worth, such actions deepen our relationships and reflect Christ’s heart to a world longing for hope. In this view, greatness is not a trophy to be earned but a transformation of the heart—one that says, “I live to give.” By embracing service, we align our values with God’s, and in doing so, we discover true fulfillment and purpose.
