In this new installment of The Passion Project series, Pastor Tyler Lynde delves into the story of Nehemiah to highlight the undeniable value of teamwork. Nehemiah was a Jewish leader in the Persian Empire who discovered the walls of Jerusalem lying in ruins. Not only did these walls provide crucial protection, but they also symbolized the heart and identity of the Jewish people. Recognizing both the practical and spiritual significance, Nehemiah rallied his community to rebuild what had been lost, shifting mindsets from hesitancy and complacency to vibrant faith and determined action.

Nehemiah’s leadership style is a masterclass in cultivating teamwork. Rather than issuing orders, he invited everyone to join the effort by saying, “Come, let us build.” That invitation placed him shoulder-to-shoulder with the people, uniting them around a shared vision. Drawing from Habakkuk 2:2, he made the vision clear, ensuring no one was left guessing about the task at hand. Spiritual leaders took the lead as well, with priests stepping forward in Nehemiah 3:1 to rebuild the Sheep Gate. Their example reminds us that when leaders roll up their sleeves first, it inspires others to follow.

What truly stands out is the diversity of the team. According to Nehemiah 3:5 and 3:27, the Tekoites played a significant role—despite their nobles refusing to help—and contributed to more than one section of the wall. From perfumers to goldsmiths, every individual found a place to serve. This inclusivity echoes 1 Corinthians 12:14-20, which emphasizes that the body of Christ comprises many parts, each essential for the whole. No skill set was too small or too specialized; everyone’s contribution mattered in a tangible way.

Past setbacks, such as the sentiment “we tried that before, and it didn’t work,” could have easily derailed the project. Instead, Nehemiah pointed his people toward a hopeful future, reminding them that what failed in the past doesn’t have to define what happens next. Psalm 133:1 underscores how God places high value on unity: when we dwell together in harmony, blessings follow. Just as the walls of Jerusalem were resurrected by people working side by side, we too are called to lift each other up, restore broken relationships, and strengthen spiritual foundations.

Throughout the process, Nehemiah never lost sight of divine alignment. He attributed much of his success to God’s favor, demonstrating that genuine partnership with God fuels our personal and collective passions. John 5:1-9 offers a parallel glimpse at the Sheep Gate in a New Testament context, where Jesus healed a man who had been waiting by the pool of Bethesda. Both accounts—the physical rebuilding in Nehemiah’s day and the spiritual restoration in Jesus’s encounter—point us toward the reality that God’s presence transforms our efforts.

Pastor Tyler illustrates that true teamwork calls for visionary leadership and willing hearts, but it also requires us to trust God’s guidance and recognize His sovereignty. This blend of faith and action produces breakthroughs in our communities and our personal lives.
