Luke 24 | Mind Blown!

Have you ever had a moment where you discovered something you hadn’t seen before even though you had looked at it what seems like a million times? I had one of those moments today as I read Luke 24. The chapter is a culmination of the book and spells out in spectacular detail the resurrection of Jesus and his subsequent days spent on earth with his disciples before his ascension into heaven.

At the end of the chapter, in verses 44-48, Jesus talks to his disciples for the last time here on earth. He reminds them of the reason why everything happened the way it did. He retraces his suffering, death, and resurrection showing them how all of it brought complete fulfillment of the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms. Those three categories were the breakdown of the Hebrew Old Testament.

The passage that amazed me and blew my mind follows. “Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and said to them, ‘Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.’” Remember that the only Scriptures that these disciples had at that time was the Old Testament. They had read these words and knew them since childhood and yet not known what lay hidden in plain sight. The entirety of the Old Testament was pointing toward the salvation, which would come from the righteous one who would lay his life down and be raised from the dead to provide forgiveness of sins to all nations who would repent and believe on him.
