You may not realize it, but you may need an upgrade.
You are reading this blog on a phone or a computer which runs on an operating system. Chances are, you have had to update the system many times over the years. The idea is that the old system has flaws and can’t run the apps and software that you want to run as smoothly as the new one, so you need the upgrade.
That is roughly the idea of the Book of Hebrews. Our old system of approaching God is not working—we need an upgrade. We need a new covenant.
This letter was written to believers in Jesus who came from a background of trying to keep the law of Moses. This system of trying to reach and please God through our works has flaws. As usual, the problem is one of “user error”. The flaw is not in the law; it is in us. We need a better system.
In fact, a key word in the Book of Hebrews is the word “better”. This new operating system is better in every way. Through the New Covenant we have:
- a better way to hear God’s voice
- a better high priest, with a better name
- a better hope
- a better covenant
- a better sacrifice
- a better cleansing (inward, not just outward)
- a new and living way by which we can draw near to God!
The main point is that Jesus Christ is a better High Priest. What does a High Priest do? He draws near to God, and he helps people draw near to God. He offers sacrifice so that we can come to God. Jesus is better because he was without sin, but he also was a real human being, so he understands our weaknesses.
In this covenant, Christ is not only the High Priest but the offering itself! In this way, all glory goes to God, “For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever” (Romans 11:36).
These Hebrew believers were still looking to themselves—that is, to their own ability to keep the law—be good enough to be acceptable to God. Does that describe you? Are you stuck in the old system of believing that your status with God is based on your performance?
The old operating system just doesn’t work—get the free upgrade today!
