Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
I have a friend that loves to use the phrase, “Real life”, when referring to Big things that have occurred. I love to hear him say this and I have even tried to use it myself thinking it would sound as cool coming out of my mouth. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have nearly the same impact when I say it, but that doesn’t keep me from trying.
The book of John is filled with the magnificent true story of Jesus’ ministry here on the earth. It begins with the recognition that Jesus has always existed and that He created everything that was made. The one who gave life now became life, in human form, so He could bring light into the world. In chapter 10, He declares He came to give life and life more abundantly. Jesus continues in chapter 14 to declare He is the way, the truth, and the life and no one could come to the Father except through Him.
As the book concludes, the curtain is pulled back on the terrible abuse Jesus suffered through Judas’ betrayal, Peter’s denial, false accusation and injustice, being beaten and mocked mercilessly, and being nailed to a cross to lay down His life for His friends. It seemed as if the same people that He had come to give life to had now taken His.
But then a “Real Life” moment occurred. When the disciples least expected it, they found an empty tomb where Jesus’ body had been laid. He had told them all along about the life He had, the life He was, and the life He would lay down so that it could be given back to Him. You see, Jesus had been raised from the dead defeating death, hell, and the grave.
The chapter ends with the verse I posted at the opening of this blog. The purpose of the book of John is fully revealed here. The Son of God would be revealed through His life, death, and resurrection so that those who believe in Him will have “Real Life” that is everlasting. Have you experienced this new life? Have you believed on the Lord Jesus Christ?
